What is an IP Address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is a numerical label identifying each device connected to a network that uses Internet Protocol. It lets devices recognize and communicate with one another.
The two main versions are IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) and IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6).
- IPv4: Four integer blocks separated by periods, each from 0 to 255. Example: 192.168.0.1.
- IPv6: Designed to address the limited number of IPv4 addresses. It has eight hexadecimal blocks separated by colons. Example: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334.
IP addresses are used for:
- Device identification: Uniquely identifying devices on a network.
- Data routing: Letting routers direct data between devices.
- Communication addressing: Providing source and destination addresses.
- Network management: Managing and configuring network devices.
IP addresses may be static or dynamic. A static address remains unchanged and is manually assigned, while a dynamic address can change and is assigned by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server. IP addresses are foundational to internet data communication.
