What is an IP Address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is a numerical label identifying each device connected to a network that uses Internet Protocol. It lets devices recognize and communicate with one another.

The two main versions are IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) and IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6).

IPv4: Four integer blocks separated by periods, each from 0 to 255. Example: 192.168.0.1.
IPv6: Designed to address the limited number of IPv4 addresses. It has eight hexadecimal blocks separated by colons. Example: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334.

IP addresses are used for:

Device identification: Uniquely identifying devices on a network.
Data routing: Letting routers direct data between devices.
Communication addressing: Providing source and destination addresses.
Network management: Managing and configuring network devices.

IP addresses may be static or dynamic. A static address remains unchanged and is manually assigned, while a dynamic address can change and is assigned by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server. IP addresses are foundational to internet data communication.
